A documentary on Robert Schwartz an AIDS patient, who took his own life at age 52, using a lethal dose of Nembutol, prescribed legally under Oregon’s Death With Dignity Act.
Shooting began June 11, 2001 on the day before he got the pills and ended May 3, 2003 when he died, surrounded by his family, friends and our camera. It is not a typical story of a terminally ill Oregonian using the law to end life. Robert had the medication longer than any other patient in the history of the law. His will to live, constantly trying to find quality in his life was what kept him alive. He decided to take his own life when he was diagnosed with Intersitial Pneumonitis, an HIV driven disease which prevents transference of oxygen in the lungs. It has no treatment and no cure. It causes death by suffocation. A former partner had died in Robert’s arms of the same disease several years before. He knew what to expect. Upon receiving the diagnosis, Robert decided, after two years of false starts, to end his life. From the filmmaker: Official website Robert's Story is not available for purchase online yet.
